Although this decision may be a disappointment to most, we would like to remind all who have supported IPA have made a difference. In our 2 1/2 years we have had some impressive accomplishments. Our vision has been brought to fruition many times and a lot of you deserve to be recognized for your efforts.

Among our accomplishments:

- Maintenance of a blog with news, events and work by local photojournalists: www.idahopa.com
- Support of the Idaho Press Club photo contest
- Served as judges and speakers at the Idaho Journalism Advisors Association’s Convention
- Held annual Photo Summits; one in Boise and one in Couer d’Alene
- Promoted numerous shootouts, helping sharpen your skills and provide you a look at what your colleagues were shooting

Most importantly we built relationships with photographers throughout this vast state. Many strong new friendships have been formed through IPA events and activities, which will no doubt carry on long after IPA is gone.

Sadly, we underestimated our ability to get people involved. When the organization was initially formed it seemed like the perfect time to get people together due in large part to the great deal of change within our industry. However, with photographers doing more work than ever, it seems as though many are just too busy. I myself have been out of Idaho for six months and cannot continue to give the time I need to maintain IPA.

We have decided to keep the blog alive and use it to display our work as well as occasional news stories we find interesting. Our community has grown larger than just the state of Idaho and we feel it is valuable to include voices from outside the state. If this interests you, please be involved! Email us and we will get you a password to the wordpress site.

As stated in our bylaws we will donate our remaining funds to the National Press Photographer’s Association (www.nppa.org)

None of our success could have happened without you. Thank you for all your effort and interest in the betterment of photojournalism and photojournalists throughout the state of Idaho.

First Place JEROME POLLOS / Couer d’Alene Press

First place, I vote (hands down) for the ‘Spring Swing’ picture – it has moment, and mood. The lens flare is okay, it gives that late afternoon feel. The only thing I would critique is that if the photographer moved slightly to the right or waited a split second while shooting, it would have provided some separation between the lady and the pole.

Charles Moore is the legendary Montgomery photojournalist whose coverage of the Civil Rights era produced some of the most famous shots in the world (the dogs and fire hoses in Birmingham, the Selma Bridge, and Martin Luther King’s arrest in Montgomery, among many others.) His photographs are credited with helping to quicken the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The noted historian, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. said that Moore’s photographs transformed the national mood and made the legislation not just necessary, but possible. This is his story.
